The one rule that stops almost every scam
Only ever exchange items inside the official Steam trade offer window, opened directly from steamcommunity.com or the Steam client itself — never a third-party site, a bot link someone sends you, or a screen-shared “trade site.”
Common scams to recognize
Fake or cloned profile
Scammers copy a trusted trader's avatar, name, and background to impersonate them. Always confirm you're dealing with the exact profile linked from their SkinMatch offer, not a similarly-named account that reached out to you first.
Impersonating staff or a moderator
Valve and Steam staff never message you first, never ask you to trade to “verify” your account, and never contact you on Discord about a CS2 trade. Treat any such message as a scam.
Requests for your Steam API key or login
Nobody legitimate ever needs your Steam Web API key, password, Steam Guard code, or a login link to complete a trade. Anyone asking for these — including a site claiming to “check” your trade — is trying to take over your account. SkinMatch itself never asks for or stores any of this.
Trade offer redirect
Some scammers send a legitimate-looking trade offer, then cancel it and send a different one, hoping you'll accept without checking again. Re-read every single item in the trade window immediately before clicking Accept, every time.
Pressure to trade outside Steam
Any request to move your trade to a third-party “trading site,” a middleman bot, or to pay or accept real money for skins is a red flag. SkinMatch only connects you with a partner — you complete the swap yourselves, inside Steam.
“Send first, I'll send mine right after”
Never send your item and wait for the other side to send theirs separately. A real Steam trade puts both sides' items in one single, mutual trade offer — nobody legitimate ever asks you to give first on trust.
Extra habits worth keeping
- Check a trader's rating and completed-trade count on their profile before agreeing to anything.
- Report an offer or a profile the moment something feels off — every offer and profile has a Report button.
- Block a user to stop seeing their offers if you'd rather not deal with them again.
- SkinMatch never asks for your Steam API key, password, or Steam Guard code, and never runs trade bots, escrow, deposits, or gambling — anyone claiming otherwise on our behalf is lying.
